An email that sends us back to the future
On the face of it, being able to send an email to our future self might seem like an amusing diversion but it could be an invaluable tool for helping us achieve our professional and personal goals.
If we were to receive a message from our past self, how would we measure up to the self to which we had aspired? Would we have grown as an individual? Would it have been a great journey? Would we have achieved our dreams? Would our past self be proud of us?
There are a number of email services that provide this type of facility. One of them, at the time of publishing this post, was reporting that 900,000 letters had been written to the future - and counting.
It would be pointless sending a message to the past as we can’t do anything to change it. And, as someone aptly once said, it's only museums that profit from the past so we would do well to enjoy the present and shape the future.
Sending an email to our future self chimes perfectly with Steven Covey’s “start with the end in mind” principle that forms one of his Seven Habits of Highly Effective People.
In composing our email, we can begin with how we want our life to be, then work backwards, identifying and putting in place the plans needed for it to become a reality
